Who am I today

March 9th, 2009 · Comments · Tuesday Topic, blogging

This week on the Tuesday Topic as you can see is: Who am I today? Today I have come a long way from who I was years ago, but as I have said before we don’t really change who we are at the core. So in my professional life I am where I imagined I would be, if not farther than that. In my personal life, back in the day I would have told you I would be married with kids by now, but my priorities have changed to focus on my career. I don’t think I would be where I am today had I married my college sweetheart. I would be somewhere in Arkansas (no offense I’m just no small town gal) feeling held back and wondering what my life would’ve been like if I had stayed where I belong in a big city.

Today and everyday no matter what I have accomplished financially at the end of the day money doesn’t buy you happiness. I need to remember each day to make myself strive to be a better person. There are times where I lose focus of what is important. Little things we miss, for instance what we eat everyday. If we get busy during our day we might make the choice to go to a drive thru. Health is something that is overlooked too often and far often noticed too late.

Today I decided to make a change. It isn’t a once in a while thing, it’s a lifestyle change. I have decided to eat healthy. This means cooking during the week. If you can imagine I am not a cook and I do not have the time, right? Well for something as important as this you make the time. So each week I will grocery shop and prepare healthy food. I even got a nutritionist to help me with finding foods that I could still enjoy but that were better substitutes. Yes I may have spent some money on it but I told myself you can’t put a price on your health. Health is your well being and it really is going to make me remember that I need to take care of myself.

Today was the first day that I cooked. I tried to prepare for the rest of the week. I cooked on the stove and baked in the oven at the same time. For not being a cook not only did my food not taste bad but it also didn’t take me that long. The trick is I bought things that were already prepped as much as they could be. ;) My momma always said, “Work Smarter, Not Harder!”

Good for you! This is a great reminder for all of us that seem to live to work, it's easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of it all. I forget to eat quite often! So what did you make for your first healthy home cooked meal? I'm a big fan of the crock-pot. I don't use it all that often, but I love the homemade yumminess without all the preparing time - plus it makes the house smell like I've been cooking for hours.

Freaking awesome. I sooooo need to be like you. Seriously, I'm trying to eat better and get more exercise. Because of what I do, I'm sitting down on a pc most of the day. However, I do love to cook so I got that part down.

Thanks, no I want to be like Mike! lol To be honest it is really hard it's kind of like I am used to eating a certain way and not doing it is against my nature. I have had a couple ups and downs this week. This is week one! But I am trying to build the habit so when I walk out of the house I have carrots and grapes in my hand so that I don't get tempted by other things. It is great that you love to cook that is the perfect start just make sure you are cooking healthy versions of what you love.

Congrats on making a decision that you(and your body) will be greatful for, for life.
I have always been a healthy eater and was a professional Linecook for over 12 years of my 17 years in food service. When my online business started taking off I quite the food service industry but keep my mad knife skills, but never found much use for being able to run 12 saute pans at once. HA!

I never really ate out, I worked in those places so I knew what was going on back there in the kitchen. I was a clean cook, but not everybody has those kind of standards.
If you watched Hells Kitchen in the past last week you saw "seth" who used his towel/cloth to wipe his forehead of sweat and then wipe out a pan before cooking in it. And the towel was pretty nasty to begin with. Ugh!
Yep. That sort of stuff happens all over the world.
I was always in favor of having control over how my food was/is prepared. Still am to this day. There are only 3 other people who I allow to cook for me. They are both family members. Two of them are Mom and her Mom (grandma).

Working from home and loving to work I get were jgoode is coming from. When I start getting testy with code or design work I often take a moment to listen to my stomach and think when was the last time I ate. Eating brings the wold back into focus.

Welcome to the world of Cooking S!
    Fish and Veggies mmmm.
    Keep it up.

Thanks for your input B. Those stories about the back of the kitchen gives me an extra incentive to cook. The only problem is that I am not that good at it yet. Maybe you could share some of these mad knife skills you speak of. I haven't caught Hell's Kitchen but it seems like a very entertaining show. Thanks for the encouragement.
