Spring into Action

March 24th, 2009 · Comments · #AdvertisingTax, Tuesday Topic, affiliate marketing

What I love about affiliate marketing is that it is a win-win situation for all involved; performance marketing is a beautiful model. Now is the time to act and defend the industry that we love. As many of you have heard: California, Minnesota, Connecticut, and Hawaii are considering putting laws on the books that would leverage affiliate marketers as “nexus” for online retailers. Affiliate marketers we need to wake up. I’m talking affiliates, OPMs, merchants, and networks. If one of us gets affected we all do.

Here is what we can do. Make ourselves heard. We don’t have to wait until our State comes up clearly this is trickling to many States and this affects us all. There are several things we can do to spring into action. First we can get informed by reading some resources below. Second and most important is to make this serious problem heard. Our industry’s survival is at stake. We can reach out to our local state representatives with the affiliate tax issue.

Here are some resources on how to get informed and become proactive today:

You can find more information on specific States in ABW here in the Affiliate Tax Forum

A strong NYC affiliate Melanie Seery is posting constant updates on her blog.

Networks sprung into action to make statements:  Official ShareASale Network Blog and the Google Affiliate Network Blog

Twitter Power: Find your State and Local Reps on Twitter, also please post with the hashtag #advertisingtax for tracking.

On a personal note, I love affiliate marketing and I am not going to let it go down. I found my local state rep today. The people you know might have the right connection for you. Reach out to friends, family, or contacts in the law industry. I spoke to a close friend in the law industry that worked with my rep. Now I am going to set up a meeting with him to get the point across. Use your connections.

If you don’t know your rep it is okay you have many ways to reinforce the reason for meeting. You can use other States as examples as well as various online resources to back the information. We are lucky to have many documented resources through blogs, forums, emails, and more. With countless posts on resources such as the Affiliate Tax Forum I am positive the level of severity will be evident to our representatives. How many people will be affected by this? Spring into Action!
