Calling all bloggers

March 27th, 2009 · Comments · #AdvertisingTax, Local, affiliate marketing, blogging

David Meerman Scott spoke on Monday at Social Media Club South Florida. He said something that stuck in my mind. The creator of Harry Potter did not tell the media or spend any marketing dollars. Instead she picked only 7 influential bloggers to tell about her story. Those 7 blogged and reached an audience of 350 million people! Today I am asking this of any bloggers out there that care about the survival of online advertisers. As you may have heard California, Minnesota, Connecticut, and Hawaii are considering putting laws on the books that would leverage affiliate marketers and advertisers as “nexus” for online retailers.

To make an effort I have blogged and am contacting media in South Florida. Missy Ward had a podcast talking about the dangers of the new advertising tax. She also contacted her local media, the Orlando Sentinel. After hearing this powerful podcast I am contacting the Sun Sentinel, Miami Herald, and Palm Beach post. All of these contacts I have found through the local social media community. Please take a moment go to the 4 minute mark on the podcast. The Spew podcast is by Missy Ward covering Affiliate Marketing, Social Media, Geeky Stuff, and Random Girl Talk. Blogging, speaking to local state representatives, local media, podcasting, tweeting with the hashtag #advertisingtax will make the difference we need.

I will leave you with the highlights of the Spew podcast:

  • The turmoil surrounding California Assembly Bill 178 (the knock-off of the NY Bill that targeted affiliates and rocked the Affiliate World)
  • The Bill explained in layman’s terms and why the ugliest word in the English language is “nexus”.
  • Who is affected by this bill and why it’s more than just affiliates and merchants in California that have to be worried.
  • Why “nexus” is being challenged now by states across the country even though the Supreme Court ruled on this subject 20 years ago in Quill Corp. vs. N. Dakota.
  • What ShareASale as a network is doing to help affiliates and merchants in affected states.
  • What affiliate marketers are doing to fight AB 178 and how you can join the grass roots efforts to help squash it, too.
  • The additional states that are working on similar anti-affiliate legislation and where it all stands today.
