CafePress FAIL

April 22nd, 2009 · Comments · Blog Intro

CafePress made a serious announcement today that in my opinion was a bad call. With little notice, a friend of mine and many others found out that their livelihood is being played around with. Good people are being shafted; sorry there is no other word to describe this. Hard working people are having their incomes cut by their new comission structures. The same people that trusted and picked CafePress as the platform for their businesses.

Scenario:
This would be the same thing if Andy came up to me and said hey Steph, by the way, your salary is being cut in half. What would you do? Would you sit there and take it? Absolutely not, this is an outrage.  I would definitely not stand for something so unacceptable. For those of you that want to voice your opinions to CafePress about this please email them at: marketplacequestions@cafepress.com.

Where to go from here?
In this scenario, I would have to move on. Now it is time for everyone to take matters into their own hands. Don’t be afraid to do things for yourself. Take things to the next level with new marketing strategies. CafePress needs quality artists; they are being greedy and don’t realize this. They are being bullies because they think others need them. But guess what CafePress? Not everyone needs you.

Personal Branding:
I was listening to The Spew podcast episode 5 today where they discussed personal branding success. The next episode of The Spew, Missy Ward should have someone that was affected by this Cafe Press announcement on the show. To discuss marketing ideas just as you did with Lisa Picarille’s bacon costume and scratch & sniff business cards. Lisa you are more than bacon to me! (If this doesn’t make sense you gotta listen to episode 5). But seriously this is a big deal for some online businesses.

Twitter Power!
Tweet about this using the hashtag: #cafepressfail. I’m being nice check out the hashtag others are using!

Alternatives:
Thoughts on Zazzle? It is an option they definitely win over CafePress right now. Check this out! Mike Allen has tried out Threadsmith and has been happy with them. Threadsmith reached out to me. Bev from Threadsmith said to give her a call with any questions 607-341-7594. She said Threadsmith welcomes storefront owners and artists to design clip art and templates for them with nice comissions. Time to try someone else out!
