Battle of the smartphones: iPhone or Droid?

November 12th, 2009 · Comments · social media, technology

The Motorola event at Morimoto looked top notch. Guests of the event received their very own Droid! This smartphone is known for doing things a little better. I think we know which other phone it is in competition with. Not only that but the Droid is exclusive to the Verizon network.

There has been a geek anticipation surrounding the Droid. Their marketing strategies have been a success. “Droid Does” highlights the features that the Droid has that other smartphones cannot do for you. This plants a seed of doubt in the consumers mind about the functionality and worth of their current phone. There was more chatter on the interwebs especially on Twitter.  Here are the Droid tweets growing by the minute.

I got to see the Droid for myself...

What I Think is Better:

  • Resolution
  • Speed
  • Simultaneous Programs
  • Camera
  • Google
  • GPS
  • Dual Keyboards

The overall quality of the phone was better. The running of simultaneous programs at once is a time saver. With their Google partnership the Google Maps, Google Voice, and other features were more advanced. The dual keyboards rock. You can convert it to the touch screen if you are having trouble switching over from the iPhone. Not only that but the GPS is voice enabled with turn-by-turn navigation. Best of all the phone lived up to the hype. Needless to say I have caught the fever.

I am a geek caught somewhere in the middle but enough about me. On the far left, we have Scott Jangro a self-proclaimed hopeless geek and mac fanboy. On the far right, we have Courtney Moore music and movie buff. She is not into technology and has been walking around for almost a year with a regular phone. Let us see what the outcome is for both of them. Which smartphone shall they pick?

To my surprise I read my first Droid review on Scott’s blog. It was such a great review that it made me wish I had not missed the Motorola party. Yes he is a mac fanboy; let’s be honest in the end the best technology wins over brand loyalty. See for yourself what Scott really thinks of the Droid. He has some pros and cons below about his new love affair.

Day One, Love: Are You Thinking About Switching to the Droid?
Day Two, Honeymoon Ended: Droid Annoyances, The Honeymoon is Over.

Let’s move on to Courtney. She wants to listen to music on her phone and to be able to check into FourSquare with her friends. She has been counting down the days for months to get rid of her crappy phone. Her contract finally ran up today. She was so excited that she went to get her phone right after work. When she got back, I was raving about the Droid but she had an iPhone in hand. I still think she will be happy with her iPhone; what she expects from a smartphone is entertainment.

The world of technology is full of innovation. No matter where you are on the geek spectrum it’s important to stay up with the times. Whether you have a smartphone, iPhone, or Droid one thing is certain Verizon’s level of service is known to be better. I know this firsthand when I switched over from them to AT&T in order to get my iPhone. AT&T is up for even more competition in the near future. Besides the Droid coming out the iPhone hits Verizon in 2010!

Are you happy with your smartphone? Would you swtich to the Droid? I know my iPhone is in danger of being replaced. Share your thoughts below.
